GS-12 is the most common of the fifteen grades, with 277,838 employees in May 2026; the largest occupations are Customs and Border Protection (1895), Miscellaneous Administration and Program (0301) and Information Technology Management (2210), and the Department of Defense employs the most of them, 94,041.

11% have reached step 10, the top of the grade, the second-lowest share of any grade.

At GS-12 the overtime premium is small for an employee exempt from the Fair Labor Standards Act (the rule, and who it covers): the cap of one and a half times the GS-10 step 1 rate is 13.9 percent above the ordinary hour at step 1 and 0.5 percent at step 5 in Rest of U.S., and from step 6 it is gone — an overtime hour pays exactly the ordinary hourly rate, in all 58 areas.

Is GS-12 a high grade?

GS-12 is the middle of the schedule, the grade of the median General Schedule employee, with 45.8% of the 1,279,389 General Schedule employees in May 2026 below it and 32.5% above it, and the median full-time pay OPM publishes for it, $111,168, is 2.2 times the national median wage of $50,980 for all occupations.

What does a GS-12 make an hour?

$36.64 to $47.63 an hour in base pay, from step 1 to step 10, and at step 1 with Rest of U.S. locality pay, $42.89, it pays 1.7 times the national median of $24.51 an hour.

What military rank is GS-12 equivalent to?

Military grade O-4 — a Major in the Army, Air Force and Marine Corps, a Lieutenant Commander in the Navy and Coast Guard — is the rank DoD treats as equivalent to GS-12 on Geneva Conventions identification cards.
